When given more than a moment with the idea, we come to recognize that faith is not merely a pious prerequisite or accidental byproduct of religion. Much more, faith instantiates the gratitude that can be found from the universally inescapable uncertainties of life.
I used this project to further embody these notions of faith by blindfolding four dancers, taking them to a remote location and asking them to move. The dancers used the exploration of the space as a gateway into the exposure of their own fears, and an experience of their own faith.
While disrupting the habituated visual sensory responses, I intentionally bound the blind folds to the dancers’ hands. This is because touch is argued to be our first sense, despite the visual hierarchy we live in. Thus I wanted the dancers to feel their eyes inside the palms of their hands and see with their finger tips.
